Does true love exist?

Ultimate true love can’t be exist within a couple or family. But, ultimate true love (it should be compassion) can exist in noble beings.

Why true love can’t be exist within a couple?
Love between a couple is a developed selfish mental factor. If a girl see his boyfriend is doing romantic conversations with another girl, her love does not exit any more. So, it can't be a true love. (But, chastity is exist and treated as a compulsory moral virtue.)

Think about a mother. If her baby hit her or blame her still her love is not decaying. So, mother's love seems a true love. Still this is not an ultimate true love. If another woman's baby blame, she may get bit angry. Mother's love only become true love for her babies.
But, noble beings radiate loving kindness to all beings without any limitation (even to enemies). We can understand how noble being's love(compassion) look like in the 'The Discourse on Loving-kindness'.
A noble beings radiate loving kindness without any limitation such as;
"Whether they are weak or strong, omitting none,
The great or the mighty, medium, short or small,
The seen and the unseen,
Those living near and far away,
Those born and to-be-born —
May all beings be at ease!"
Also, this love is similar as a mother's love, who protect her own baby by putting her life as a second thing. But in the noble being's case this love is spread to all beings not only to a specific people or group. Noble beings don't only think about happiness of this life instant. But, they think about happiness of very long cycle of death and rebirth(Samsara). This life is like a instance when compare to the cycle of rebirth.
Buddhism explains Loving Kindness as a powerful weapon. When a person living with radiating loving kindness, others can't harm him. You may think this as a fantasy. But this really work.
We normally always be in angry with our enemies. Our angry mental powers, allow others to harm us. But, if we truly radiate loving kindness to our enemies, they can't harm us. When we spread loving kindness we receive protection from all directions. There is a nice story to explain this. There was a cow giving milk to her baby calf. Then an hunter shoot an arrow to the cow, but arrow could not reach the cow since her loving kindness to the baby.(This is only an Example. Please don't try this. If the cow is in angry mood or if it don’t have enough loving kindness power, arrow will reach her. But, you can try spreading loving kindness to your enemies.)
I sometimes do loving kindness in direction wise, such as;
"Me and all beings in my front direction; No one may not harm others!, No one may not angry with others!, everyone may wish other's happy. Me and all beings may have ultimate happiness Nirvana"
"Me and all beings in my back direction...."
Similarly; right direction, left direction, front sub direction(if you face to north this is north-east), back sub direction, right sub direction, left sub direction, below direction, up direction. (Also you can do like north, south, east, west,.... But you have to aware about directions and clearly imagine direction and all beings become non harming to each other.)
We can do loving kindness in different ways. Such as, direction wise as above. Also range wise as below;
All beings in New York, all beings in USA, all beings in Earth, all beings in our solar system, all beings in thousandfold world systems, all beings in our galaxy, all beings in the infinite universe.
.
If a couple do loving kindness to each other they can live like a God and Goddess. If a employee do loving kindness to his managers and directors he will receive many promotions. If a minister do loving kindness to beings in his district he will receive many votes in an Election. If a president do every action expecting his people's happy and spread loving kindness to his people, he will hold the president post for a long time.

How to scientifically prove the existence of Gods?

Let's think about invisible beings (such as spirit, demons or divine beings). To prove scientifically, we have to create an hypothesis which should be able to replicate by scientists and experiments must result the same thing. When scientists find a new kind of animal they have the death body. So other scientist can see the same thing(death body). There is an evidence.
According to the mythical facts invisible beings have a different kind of material (I call those as fine materials) which we can't see. When an invisible being born their body suddenly arise(with a Karmic power) and when they die their body vanish without any evidence. So, there is no scientifically testable thing even in fine materials. So, it is almost impossible to prove them scientifically. But we can make some hypothesis with use psychic powers gain from higher meditation as a tool.
Here is my proposal of scientifically proving existence of higher beings.
Steps;
1)Group of scientists do Samata meditation and get Eight Attainments(Ashta-Samapatti) and Five Supernormal Powers(Pancha-Abhigna) Levels of Meditation.
2)Then this scientists group go to a heavenly world with their psychic powers(and remember their goal without attracting to goddess). They can't just tell that there are heavenly worlds and divine beings. Since they don't have any evidence.
3)With psychic powers extort a diving being.
4)Safely come back to the human world.
5)Make a psychic jail(which other scientist can't see) and put him.
6)Force him to show appearance.
7)Then other scientist have to investigate with all of electromagnetic wave cameras. Have to prove he is not a human magician.
Here is my prediction of what will happen then;
Final conclusion about the experiment.
Some higher meditators claim they can bring a divine being from a heavenly world. But when scientist check those with all possible ways he it just a human magician but having some unusual huge radiations. Next day after the experiment. News from the television. “Huge earthquake happen and lot of humans died. Government ask help from other countries.”
So, you can understand that there is no way to prove it scientifically. Scientific method can't prove every aspect of nature.

How permanent enlightenment possible?

According to Buddhism, permanent enlightenment (Nirvana) is possible without any reverse back. Also higher meditation levels (Called Jhana), sometime can temporary block defilements and give similar experience as a higher level of enlightenment. But, once he loses his meditation Jhana, he will come back to normal life and he will have mental defilements again. Even if we practice meditation for a long time without knowing ‘Four Noble Truths’ and ‘Three Marks of Existence’ it will just only be a temporary moral virtue and higher mind concentration.

Lord Buddha shows that, there are nine beyond world things ('Nine supermundane things' or Nava-lokuttara-dhamma). So, Permanent enlightenment is possible in four levels since these special kinds of mental consciousnesses. Once after, any one experiences these consciousnesses, he reaches enlightenment permanently in some levels. There are ten fetters (Sanyojana) which living beings tie to the cycle of rebirth. All of ten fetters will completely vanish at the 4th final stage.

Nine super-mundane things ;

  • Sotapatti-magga-citta and Sotapatti-phala-citta

When a being experience these two consciousnesses, he become to a Stream-enterer (Sotapanna) who is free from;

  1. Self view or the belief that there is an eternal soul somewhere in an animal. (Sakkaya-Ditti).

  2. Doubt about Lord Buddha’s self enlightenment and nine super-mundane things (Vicikicca).

  3. The belief that by performing various rites and rituals one can end all sins and reach eternal happiness. (Silabbata-paramasa).

  • Sakadagami-magga-citta and Sakadagami-phala-citta

Become Once-returner (Sakadagami), who has greatly attenuated;

  1. Sensual desire (Kamaraga).

  2. Ill will (Patigha).

  • Anagami-magga-citta and Anagami-phala-citta

Become Non-returner (Anāgāmi), who is free from sensual desire and ill will.

  • Arahatta-magga-citta and Arahatta-phala-citta

Become an Arhant who is free from all fetters. Such as;

  1. Craving for prosperity in the material worlds (Rup-raga).

  2. Craving for prosperity in the non-material worlds (Arupa-raga).

  3. Conceit (Mana).

  4. Restlessness (Uddhacca).

10. Ignorance of reality (Avijja)

  • Nirvana

After passed away from the last body his sequence of consciousness reached a permanent happy status called Nirvana.

As the eight factors of the ‘noble eightfold path’ gradually grow over a period of time, at some instant qualities of all eight factors arise in the same consciousness. Only when all the eight factors concurrently arise with anti-defilement power supramundane consciousness can arise.

There are four pairs which we can't separate. If anyone could experience a Magga-citta, he will definitely experience the relevant Phala-citta in the Citta sequence without any delay. When we do a Karma, the result comes with some delay. But for Magga-citta resultant Phala-citta comes instantly. It is said that, if anyone could experience Magga-citta just a moment before the end of world, the entire world ending process will delay till he experiences the Phala-citta. Magga-citta is so powerful it can stop the world ending for an instant.

Magga-citta is the final result of all Threefold Training. When a being practices threefold training his mind become clear and clear about Four Noble Truths. At a good instant he experiences Magga-citta. (This Magga-citta is the 'Antarik Concentration' as in 5th stanza in ‘The Jewel Discourse’.)

For an analogy, think about an aggressive river. It is known that, at a certain portion of deep places of this river, there are four large gems together on the bottom. If a clever person stops the movement of water in that portion of river and cleans, then water becomes calm and transparent. At a good instant he will see that there are four gems, and then all of his doubts vanished. This is the instant he experiences Sotapatti-magga-citta. Aggressive river is the mind with mental defilement. Four gems are Four Noble Truths. Calm water means mind concentration. Clean water means mind without mental defilement.

Also, those who have experienced these supramundane consciousness know that they are already enlightened. But maybe they don’t know the English word of enlightenment. Sometime, they will not be able to explain it with words.

Is the goal of Buddhism freedom?

Yes. Gain freedom from all of sufferings (Vimukthi Sukha).
There are two types of happiness (Sukha). Sensual Happiness(Kama Suka) and Happiness gain by becoming free from sufferings (Vimukthi Sukha or Happiness of freedom).
Ultimate happiness of freedom is Nirvana (or permanent enlightenment). Buddhism describe that this happiness of freedom(Nirvana) is very much valuable than Sensual Happiness. Sensual pleasures are very short and receive from the outside and has lot of disturbance. For a small sensual pleasures ( such as for a good taste of a food), we have to do lot of efforts. Also, to revive a sensual pleasures, we may have to do bad things(Bad Karma) this will arise lot of bad sufferings in the future (according to Karmic lows). Sensual happiness is like a dog try to eat a bone. When a dog bite a bone dog's own blood came and it taste those. Nirvana is permanent. Even for trillions of trillion years it is permanent. If you stayed in worlds for a long time you may have to cry for numerous times such that, if all tears collected it will be more than the amount of water in the sea. But you will face only negligible amount of happiness. Nirvana have no disturbance. Nirvana is not something compounded or exist since a cause. Nirvana receive by removing all causes. That is why Lord Buddha said below as his final words;
"Behold, O monks, this is my last advice to you. All compounded things (which is born, come into being) are subject to decay (So, caused to sufferings). Work hard to gain your own salvation without any delay."
Buddhism says Nirvana (ultimate freedom) has infinite good qualities.

If there is no self, how reincarnation exist?

If there is no self, how reincarnation exist?

According to Buddhism, there is no part which we can treat as self (or soul) among material or non-material parts of a living being. All of the material and non-material parts exist as a huge sequence of base units and we conventionally treat those as a living being.

When we think scientifically, a living being is a huge collection of various kinds of atoms. Similarly Buddhism teaches there is an ultimate entity of matter (this may be the fundamental particle as in the science) which is very much smaller than an atom, and called Rupa-kalapa. Life time of a Rupa-kalapa is very short but when one dies one or many new Rupa-kalapa arises. So, we can see objects (E.g.; coin, pencil, electron, physical body) as solid and unchanging things. But actually every material object is a huge changing sequence of Rupa-kalapas.

Every physical object (E.g.; pencil) is a convention that is felt differently from animal to animal by the nature of their sense base. Humans have universally agreed on some scale for measuring the length. Then for similar shaped objects they have given a name. Evan for the same pencil, different humans see different things. Conventionally they may say there is a pencil. But actually a pencil is a huge changing sequence of ultimate entities.  For an animal with eyes like an electron microscope, the world is just a vast collection of atoms.  By the Lord Buddha, material things are likened to a great lump of foam.

Similar to the materials, there are ultimate entities for non-material parts (which is related to the mind). Let’s simply call it “Citta”. Citta is not like material entities, it can only exist one at a time for a being. When one dies another one arises instantly without any delay (like a wave). Lifetime of a Citta is very small (smaller than trillions part of a second). Sequence of Citta never stops, even at the sleep. At death this sequence will smoothly transfer to a new body without any break. So, the non-material part is a huge Citta sequence or stream. When our last Citta vanishes from the body, the next Citta arises at a new place as a new being without any delay since a Karma (this Karma is called Regenerative-Karma). Citta stream doesn’t end since its craving to exist. Before the last Citta vanishes, the Citta stream will remind a past Karma. So, this Karma will power the new life. But nothing goes from past life to new life. But we can't treat new life as a different being. Since new life arises since the past life. For an example, think about your image from a mirror. Image arises since you and we treat image as yours but it is a different thing. Similarly you should think about the new being after death. New birth is not the same being but also not a different being.

What is the definition of enlightenment?

What is the definition of enlightenment?

'Spiritual Enlightenment' can be defined as gaining the perfect knowledge about the four noble truths or about life.

As Buddhism teaches, no one can't give this perfect knowledge with words or even with telepathy. Individuals have to gradually self-realize it. Only some approximate assumptions can teach according to the teacher's teaching power. Those assumptions can be;

  • Three Marks of Existence

All worldly things are Impermanent, suffering and non-self.

  •  Four Noble Truths

Cycle of death-rebirth is suffering, Suffering is due to cravings, Cravings can be overcome, Path to overcome the cravings is the Threefold Training (or Noble Eightfold Path).

  • Threefold Training

Practice moral virtue (Five precepts, Eight precepts etc.), Get higher level of mind concentration (Samatha Meditation), Get higher wisdom to analyze these assumptions (Vipassana meditation).  These three steps can’t be separated such as complete one and then complete other. These three steps have to develop cyclically again and again till the enlightenment.

  • Five aggregate definition of a living being (Collections exist as a living being without any soul)

Self-view of the Citta sequence existed for a very long time, without any beginning in the cycle of rebirth. So, it is difficult to remove this self-view. Buddhism defines a living being in different ways to give a better realization. We previously defined a living being as combinations of non-materiel and material things exist as generations without any permanent part. (There is a non-ending huge sequence of Citta connected with a living being. When sensation this Chitta stream shifts to different places to process the sensation. When a being is living, a huge amount of sensation processes arises.)

According to Buddhism there are six sense bases. Those are eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind. In this definition, we think a living being as a stream of ever changing five types of collections connected within six sense bases. Those collections are; Material form or corporeality(sense triggers), feelings(pleasure, displeasure or neutrality), perception(recognition with mental labels), mental formations(mental factors that are required to do an action) and consciousness(knowings or mind). This collection is called ‘Five Aggregates’. Buddhism defines a living being as a huge collection of five aggregates without any soul.

[ Each of aggregate has collations from past, percent and future. We have to consider these five aggregates in time and place wise five bundles (Khandha Sutta , Maha-punnama Sutta). ]

1. Material form or corporeality (Rupa)

Here we consider all of the substantial entities of matter collectively. All of these things aren’t permanent and  always change from one state to another. When we think past, percent and future with the place of arising there is a bundle of material phenomena related to a living being. This bundle is the first aggregate.

2. Feelings (Vedanā)

The sensory experience of an object is either pleasant, unpleasant or neutral. When we think past, percent and future with the place of arising there is a bundle of feelings. This bundle is called the feeling aggregate.

3.Perception (Saññā)

A mental label that recognizes an object is called Saññā. Saññā helps to recognize an object. There are millions of types of Saññā. E.g; the shape of a tree, houses, sounds, colours,..etc. Education will acquire more and more Saññā. Then he may become more egotistical. When we think past, percent and future with the place of arising there is a bundle of Saññā. This bundle is called the perception aggregate.

4. Mental formations (Saṃskāra)

A motive or intention with which an action is doing called Cetanā. All actions (E.g; speech, eat, read) start with a Cetanā. But support from mind and other mental factors are required to do an action (here Karmas may generate). Mind and other mental factors with the leading Cetanā related to an action is called Saṃskāra.

When we think past, percent and future with the place of arising there is a bundle of Saṃskāra. This bundle is called the Mental formations aggregate.

5.Consciousness (Viññāna)

For a normal being, there are six internal-external pairs of sense bases(doors) as follows;

  1. eye and visible objects

  2. ear and sound

  3. nose and odor

  4. tongue and taste

  5. body and touch

  6. mind and mental objects(such as past memories)

One of six kinds of trigger came from one of six external sense bases (Ayatana). Then it causes a sense trigger in one of internal sense bases. Then one sensation process starts. Chitta stream will shift and process the sensation with many thought processes (Chitta-viti). To see an image, many thought processes are arised. (When we are sleeping, such as when there is no trigger from the eye, ear, nose, tongue, body or mind, the Chitta stream only contains Bhavanga-Chitta. Bhavanga-Chitta always exists from the conception when there is no thought process. Bhavanga-Chitta doesn’t allow the Chitta stream to stop.)

When a trigger arises in a sense door, sensation will happen with many thought processes. For an example; when an object appears in front of the eyes, a series of consciousness arises, which recognizes the object. This series of consciousness is called "eye-consciousness". Ordinary people call this as “vision” rather than a series of consciousness.

Mind is similar to sequence of consciousness or Viññāna.  Here we consider all of knowings(or recognitions) as the consciousness aggregate.

When we think past, percent and future with the place of arising there is a bundle of consciousness. This bundle is called the consciousness aggregate.

  • Example of Vipassana Meditation (Looking five aggregates as Impermanent, Suffering and Non-self)

“These material forms are not me. There is no part within material forms which can be treated as me.”

“These feelings are not me. There is no part within feelings which can be treated as me.”

“These perceptions are not me. There is no part within perceptions which can be treated as me.”

“These mental formations are not me. There is no part within mental formations which can  be treated as me.”

“These consciousnesses are not me. There is no part within consciousness which can be treated as me.”

“All of these five aggregates are not me. Those are just results of some causes. These five aggregates are impermanent, suffering and non-self.”

“There is nothing to take as me. All things are just results of some causes. All things are Impermanent, Suffering and Non-self.”

  • Dependent Arising (Cyclic chain of causes and results which explain the endless cycle of rebirth.)

Two causes of past lives

1) Ignorance

2) Karmic Formations

Five percent results since past causes

3) Rebirth-consciousness (first mind of a new birth)

4) First materiel embryo base unit and mind base five aggregates,

5) Arising sense spheres; eye, ear, nose, tongue and skin

6) Sense spheres triggers or contacts

7) Feelings

Three cause of current life

8) Craving

9) Grasping

10) Good or Bad Karmas case to a birth

Two future results since cause of current life

11) Birth

12) Ageing & Death

If we could perfectly remove “1) Ignorance” with getting perfect knowledge about life, then there will not be any greed or anger in the sequence of consciousness. Then there are no “2) Karmic Formations”. Then there will not be “3) Rebirth-consciousness”. Then there will not “4) First materiel embryo atom”. …  Finally there will not be “12) Ageing & Death” or any kind of suffering. We have to repeatedly think ‘Dependent Arising’ top to bottom and bottom to top.

Enlightenment is the final result of the gradual process of all Threefold Trainings (Noble Eightfold Path).  For example; Clean defilement, Gain mind concentration, Gain knowledge, Increase awareness and realize the reality in some amount. Again, Clean more defilement, Gain more mind concentration, Gain more knowledge, Increase the awareness and have a better realization about the reality, …..

There are Seven Factors of Enlightenment:

  1. Mindfulness (Sati)

  2. Investigation of Dhammas/Reality/”Four Noble Truths” (Dhamma-vicaya)

  3. Energy to continue (Viriya)

  4. Joy or rapture (Pīti)

  5. Relaxation or tranquility of both mind and body (Passaddhi)

  6. Mind Concentration gained with meditation (Samādhi)

  7. Equanimity maintain all of these factors(Upekkha)

To experience the final Magga-citta, it is important to develop all of these factors in a balanced way. Reading this answer will develop your 2nd factor 'Investigation of Dhammas'. But this doesn’t develop other factors in a balanced way. So most likely, you will not experience a Magga-citta. But, if you have developed other factors before in this life or in a previous life, there is a possibility of experiencing a Magga-citta with balancing all factors. (After doing meditation, you can calmly try reading this answer again. But for someone, it may need many years of practice to reach a Magga-citta.) Lord Buddha teaches us the best way to develop these factors is “Four Mindfulness Meditation” or Satara-Satipatthana Meditation. (Please study Satipatthana-Sutta. Also there is a free 10-day course from www.dhamma.org with worldwide locations.)

This kind of assumption knowledge (also called 'Parathogoshaka-Prathya'), can only be given by a rightly self-awakened Lord Buddha or by his disciple. This answer has enough assumption knowledge for an extremely intelligent person to reach Enlightenment without doing hard practices in the 'Threefold Training'.

During the cycle of rebirth almost all time, a being can't hear these Dharma(assumptions) since Lord Buddhas are very rare. No one can self-realize these assumptions since the all ignoble beings (almost all of us) always live with different kinds of defilements (such as; greed, hatred, or delusion) even without knowing. You may think I don’t have a lot of defilements such as greed. But lots of them exist in a tiny manner without knowing. I personally think, if Lord Buddha could not come to the word, currently our world may be like a terrorist area. If so, we can't hear words like Four Noble Truths and Enlightenment. I think also words like Donations will be rare.

The time we can hear these assumption words (Buddha's Dispensation) are like an instant when compared to the cycle of rebirth. For a very intelligent person, these assumptions are like divine nectar since these words can remove all infinite amounts of sufferings he has to face in the cycle of rebirth.

When a person reaches Enlightenment, he will become free from all kinds of sufferings permanently after his current life. He will be permanently happy. So, enlightenment can be defined as gaining eternal happiness. Also when attaining Enlightenment all of his cravings will vanish. So, enlightenment can also be defined as removing all kinds of cravings.

There are five stages of enlightenment. First four stages (Stream-enterer, Once-returner, Non-returner, Arahant) are called ‘Sopadisesa-Nirvana’. Last and final stage is the passing away from the last body and called  ‘Anupadisesa-Nirvana’.
